How did you get into accounting?

After finishing my GCSEs at South Dartmoor Community College, and then a sports programme at South Devon College between 16 and 18, I moved straight into an Apprenticeship with Griffin. Initially, I was unsure on what I wanted to do after college, but I was not keen on University and knew I was interested in doing something finance related. I did a lot of research around accountancy, and spoke to someone I knew working in accounting, before eventually deciding to apply.

Why did you make the move to Griffin?

Following a lot of research I applied for a few accountancy firms, but I liked the idea of working at Griffin, as there was an opportunity to look at various types of work during an apprenticeship. I applied online, and started as an Accounts Assistant in August 2023.

What does your training entail?

I am currently working towards the AAT Level 3 (Advanced Diploma in Accounting), which I hope to finish in the next few months. I will then be moving on to the AAT level 4 qualification. Every other week, I get a paid study day at home, which is very helpful to progress with my training. The training is provided by Accountancy Learning, and uses both textbooks and online resources. Every apprentice has a tutor with Accountancy Learning, who we have regular catch ups with, so they can answer any questions we might have, and check in on our progress.

Is your career progression clear to you?

There is a very clear path for progression. Once I finish AAT level 3, I will move on the Level 4 qualification. After completing this, I would like to move on to the ACA course, with the end goal of eventually becoming a Chartered Accountant.

What do you like about working at Griffin?

Working at Griffin, there is an opportunity to cover all aspects of accounting working, even as an apprentice. I have also been part of external audits, where it has been a great experience to meet clients and visit them on-site.

The team at Griffin is also great. It is great to be part of a young and positive team, where a lot of colleagues are completing similar training, so are able to help each other.

The team is very friendly and supportive, and everybody gets along well with each other. We even have a team in a corporate 6-aside football team.

Do you have all the support you need?

At work I have a line manager who is able to help with any queries or issues I have. We have monthly catch ups which is great to talk about any issues, or how I can progress.

I also have my tutor with Accountancy Learning, who is great support with working towards my exams, and helping with any issues I have.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?

Outside of work, I spend a lot of my time playing football, or trying other sports.
