You may have received an email from Companies House requesting that all Directors and Persons with Significant Control (PSCs) verify their identity. This is an important legal change that will affect all UK companies.
Currently, identity verification for UK companies is voluntary, however, this will become mandatory from 18 November 2025 during a 12-month transition period. From that point, companies must confirm that all Directors and PSCs have verified their identity when filing the Confirmation Statement.
How to Verify your identity
The verification can be completed online using the GOV.UK One Login service. Once you have registered for a GOV.UK One Login, and you will then be directed to the ID check.
The ID check involves:
- Uploading a photo of your passport
- Using your phone to scan the biometric chip in your passport
- Completing a facial recognition scan
- Entering your home address and the year you moved in
If you do not have a biometric passport, you can use one of the following:
- UK photo driving licence (full or provisional)
- UK biometric residence permit
- UK biometric residence card
- UK frontier worker permit
Once the ID check is complete, you will receive a unique verification code.
What You Should Do Now
Companies House will be contacting all companies directly with further guidance. However, we recommend acting early to avoid delays or disruptions.
- Identifying all directors and PSCs in your organisation.
- Inform them of the new requirements.
- Encourage early verification during the current voluntary period.
- Ensure your registered email address is up to date with Companies House.
